Cefuroxime is in a group of drugs called cephalosporin (SEF a low spor in) antibiotics. It works by fighting bacteria in your body.
Cefuroxime is used to treat many kinds of bacterial infections, including severe or life-threatening forms.

Inhibits cell wall synthesis promoting osmotic instability usually bactericidal

♦ Perioperative prevention

♦ 750 mg 1 tab BID

Contraindicated in patients hypersensitive to drug or other cephalosporin.

Use cautiously in patients hypersensitive to penicillin because of possibility of cross-sensitivity with other beta lactam antibiotics

CV: phlebitis, thrombophlebitis

GI: diarrhea, anorexia, vomiting

Hematologic: hemolytic anemia, thrombocytopenia, transient neutropenia, eosinophilia

Aminoglycosides: May cause synergistic activity against some organisms.May increase nephrotoxicity. Monitor patient’s renal function closely.


♦ Before giving dug. ask patient if she is allegic to penicillin or cephalosporin. Obtain specimen for culture and sensitivity tests before giving first dose. absorption of oral drug is induced.
